Nazzarena Poli Maramotti’s work develops through a constant oscillation between gesture and form. Her paintings emerge from layered colour and gestural interventions, creating dense, dynamic surfaces from which recognisable elements—figures, fragments of landscape, natural forms—appear. These references remain unstable and partial, poised on a threshold where the mark coalesces into an image, only to dissolve again.
Her practice is rooted in the painting process itself: broad brushstrokes, shifts in rhythm, and a continuously moving surface make the evolution of the image visible as it unfolds. Her engagement with traditional subjects—portrait, landscape, and still life—serves as a point of departure for exploring relationships between colour, light, material density, and visual construction. The repetition of these subjects reduces narrative weight, allowing her to focus on the possibilities of painting, working through addition and subtraction while keeping the subject minimally recognisable.
